The Brighton-based multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and producer explores the tension between serenity and the accelerated pace of contemporary life on his new single
Quinn Oulton releases “Can We Stay Here Please”, one of six singles leading into his forthcoming album What I Meant To Say, due November 13 via Frequency. The Brighton-based multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and producer draws from his foundations in jazz while reaching further into contemporary R&B and alt-pop, shaping the track around the uneasy prospect of leaving somewhere that has offered a rare sense of calm. The song was written after several months spent living in Lagrasse, a small medieval village in southern France surrounded by vineyards and mountains, where days unfolded alongside monastery bells, walks along the village walls, and swims in nearby rivers. Returning from that environment meant reconnecting with social media, career progression, and the accelerated rhythm of everyday life. “The idea of anything else was frightening, and completely impossible to compute at the time,” Oulton says, capturing the emotional disorientation behind a song about knowing that an idyllic period has to end.
What I Meant To Say develops that feeling into a broader reflection on the pressure to choose between opposing positions and identities. The album pushes back against binaries such as conservative or liberal, art or business, success or failure, and authentic or fake, instead embracing nuance and the possibility of holding different perspectives at once. That philosophy also shapes the record’s sonic language, balancing light and dark, digital and analogue, emotional and produced elements. The project follows Oulton’s debut album Alexithymia, which attracted hundreds of thousands of listeners, while “100 Degrees” has surpassed twelve million streams. His work has received support from Giles Peterson, Jamz Supernova, Huey Morgan, Sian Eleri, Jack Saunders, Jamie Cullum, BBC Introducing London, and Bandcamp, while his live career has included UK and European tours supporting KNOWER, Elijah Fox, and Chezile. He has also produced for artists including Wayne Snow, Eyelar, and Guvna B. With “Can We Stay Here Please”, Oulton introduces an album that treats contradiction not as something to resolve, but as a space where different approaches can coexist.
