Listening to “Simulacra” today means returning to one of Charm School’s earliest moments, but from a perspective the band could not have had at the time. It was their first released song, now resurfacing in a mix completed by Steve Albini before his death. Rather than simply restoring an early recording, the release turns that document into a way of looking back at a starting point after the band’s identity has already evolved.
The absence of lyrics makes a specific lyrical reading impossible, yet the song’s place within the group’s story remains clear. “Simulacra” belongs to a transitional period that moved Andrew Sellers’ earlier work toward something darker and more aggressive. Its return does not feel like straightforward nostalgia either. Albini’s mix changes how that early moment can be heard now, creating a conversation between the archive and Charm School’s established identity.
Tension, darkness and friction
Post-Punk, Gothic and Dark Wave form the sonic core, while No Wave and Post-Rock broaden its sense of tension. The result feels moody, physical and atmospheric, with a darkness that also leaves room for sensuality. Albini’s mix adds another perspective to this foundational recording without stripping away its documentary character.
A photograph that starts moving again
The story of “Simulacra” is also a story of a band revisiting its own beginning. Its appeal lies in hearing how a song created at Charm School’s starting point can acquire another meaning when brought back from an archive that no longer belongs exclusively to the past. The starting point remains, but the way we hear it has changed.
