Charm School x Cryb – “Tension (Cryb Simulacra Remix)” | Dark Wave inside an uncertain reality

Once a representation begins to replace what it is supposed to represent, telling authenticity from appearance becomes increasingly difficult. “Tension (Cryb Simulacra Remix)” takes Charm School’s fixation on the idea of the simulacrum and pushes it into a darker, more electronic and physical space. Cryb turns the speculation, contradiction and unease of “Simulacra” into a sustained state of tension.

“Getting played by AI love” introduces a distinctly contemporary image into that landscape, suggesting that even affection can be simulated, automated or mistaken for something emotionally genuine. The sequence “You say you will, you say you won’t / You do and then you don’t” deepens the instability. There is no single contradiction to resolve; contradiction itself appears to be the system governing the song.

From No Wave into darker electronics

Charm School’s roots in No Wave and post-punk are redirected here toward Gothic and Dark Wave, with Cryb emphasizing the original material’s repetitive, obsessive character. “Tension” becomes more than a word—it takes on a rhythmic function. Repeated vocals around “Tension” and “Simulacra Simulation” behave almost like a mechanism keeping the track locked inside its own cycle.

When the simulacrum becomes emotional confinement

The central concept gains its weight precisely because it remains unresolved. If a simulation can take the place of reality, how can we know which part of an emotional experience is still authentic? The remix offers no answer; instead, it reproduces the uncertainty until it becomes atmosphere. As “Simulacra Simulation” keeps returning, the track seems to close its own loop, leaving behind an unsettling possibility: perhaps there is no way out while we remain participants in the simulation.
