Charm School x INHALT – “Desolation” | When desire turns suffering into a form of devotion

Attraction and rejection occupy the same space in “Desolation,” where Charm School and INHALT turn a relationship shaped by manipulation into a cycle of desire that is difficult to break. The narrator recognizes the lies and the damage, yet continues reaching for the person responsible for both. That contradiction drives a song that examines emotional dependence without offering an easy way out.

Andrew Charm’s lyrics draw on images of worship, pleading, and submission to portray a connection in which affection becomes a search for validation through pain. The crown of lies represents the power held by the person controlling the relationship, while the repeated shifts between love and hate reveal a mind caught between rejection and need. “Desolation” does not tell the story of a breakup. Instead, it stays inside the conflict, tracing the fascination that can keep someone attached to what hurts them.

The body dances while the mind stays trapped

The collaboration with Matia Simovich, who composed the music, blends Electronic Body Music (EBM) and darkwave through forceful rhythms and an electronic aesthetic inspired by the 1980s. Hypnotic repetition and synthetic textures sustain the dancefloor momentum, while the lyrics introduce a psychological tension that prevents the rhythm from feeling entirely liberating.

Repetition as a form of confinement

Released as an independent single and included on a three-track EP featuring two remixes of “Simulacra,” “Desolation” extends Charm School’s sound into more overtly electronic territory. Its central contrast lies between physical movement and emotional paralysis: the music propels the body forward while the narrative remains caught in the same cycle of desire, control, and devastation.
