The Vancouver trio highlights a standout from Videopticons, an album built on driving bass, fractured guitars and analog electronics with sharp melodic hooks.

The Zaxons have released a new video for “Adrian Knows,” one of the standout tracks from their current album, Videopticons. The Vancouver trio draws on the precision of Wire and Magazine, the restless energy of new wave and the electronic unease associated with artists such as Gary Numan. Driving basslines, angular guitar parts, primitive synths and Julian Growcott’s coolly detached vocals shape a sound that is immediately melodic without losing its edge. The song’s lyrical inspiration comes from Adrian Mole, the self-conscious teenage protagonist of Sue Townsend’s 1982 novel The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13¾. As Growcott explains, the track addresses the difficulty of fitting in at school and navigating classmates and teachers whose attitudes are entitled, bigoted and narcissistic.

The accompanying video pays tribute to 1970s and ’80s Vancouver through the perspective of a young person beginning to understand the people around him and finding refuge in the city itself. Books, art, music, architecture and film become ways to make sense of the world. This interplay between technological memory and the present also shapes Videopticons, an eight-track album that revisits the imagined future of early-1980s electronic culture without simply reproducing its sounds. “Keswick Cutouts” opens with urgent bass and buzzing electronics; the title track leans into nocturnal British post-punk, “Mumpsimus” twists brighter melodies into stranger forms, and “Television Play” closes with sludgy bass, haunted guitars and distorted-media textures. Featuring Growcott on guitar and vocals, Dave Charan on bass and vocals, and Ben Wilson on drums and synthesizer, The Zaxons connect post-punk’s legacy with a contemporary sensibility, balancing catchy songwriting with abrasion and experimentation.
