Italian vocalist Irene Serra explores the gradual loss and rediscovery of self within a controlling relationship on the latest preview of The Silence Is Deafening.
“Faded” is the new single from ISQ, the project of Italian vocalist and songwriter Irene Serra, and the third preview of The Silence Is Deafening, her fifth studio album due October 23. Built around a laid-back, jazz-infused approach, the song examines the gradual process of losing yourself within a controlling relationship and eventually beginning to recognize yourself again. Serra deliberately moves the focus away from victimhood and toward reclaiming identity, tracing the point where confusion and emotional dependence begin to shift into clarity, self-belief and freedom. The song also considers how controlling dynamics can develop through small compromises and growing self-doubt, slowly creating a distance between who someone once was and who they have become.
“Faded” follows “Animal” and “On Shoulders of Giants”, while The Silence Is Deafening signals a darker, guitar-driven and cinematic direction that Serra places somewhere between noir jazz and Massive Attack. Arriving after eight years away from album releases, the record focuses on women’s lives, including those lived openly and those shaped by careful silence, while paying tribute to Serra’s mother and to women whose experiences echo her own. ISQ brings together sophisticated jazz musicianship, alternative pop sensibilities and electronic textures, with the current lineup featuring Richard Sadler on bass, Chris Nickolls on drums and electronics, and Luca Boscagin on guitar. Across more than two decades, Serra has developed the project through intimate clubs, jazz venues and concert halls, earning recognition from outlets including Jazz FM, Jazzwise and Clash. ISQ will perform the new material in London, Egham and Brighton across October and November.
