Soft Science navigates memory and acceptance in new single “Fade”

The Sacramento band shares the third preview of their album “Sand”, a shimmering meditation on impermanence and the quiet comfort of human connection.

“Fade” is Soft Science’s new single, a piece that drifts between reflection and acceptance while exploring how moments slip into the past even as they continue to shape us. It is the third preview of their fifth album, “Sand”, set for release on September 4 via Shelflife Records in North America and Spinout Nuggets in the UK. The track blends melancholy and warmth, inviting listeners into a space where memory, love, and imagination converge long after the final note has faded.

The lyrics capture the push and pull between holding on and moving forward, revisiting past moments while the chorus settles into the gap between what’s gone and what remains. “The past is a foreign country” —the phrase that inspired the opening “foreign lands”— serves as a trigger to reflect on the accumulation of change and how, over time, small transformations lead to a point where everything has shifted and what was is now just memory. The song finds comfort in human connection, suggesting that some relationships can provide stability even as everything else changes. “I imagined this song playing in the car on a romanticized road trip along the coast,” says vocalist Katie Haley, alluding to the cinematic quality that runs through the track.

Made up of Katie Haley (vocals, percussion), Matt Levine (lead guitar), Ross Levine (guitar, backing vocals), Tony Cale (drums), Becky Cale (bass, backing vocals), and Hans Munz (electronics), Soft Science builds its sound from twelve-string guitars, synthesizers, and layers of celestial harmonies that oscillate between dream pop, shoegaze, and indie rock. “Fade” follows previous previews “Understand” and “Spinning”, and joins an album that examines how love, memory, and identity are shaped by change, asking what it means to stay connected in an uncertain world. The band, which has performed at KEXP, WFMU, and festivals including New York Popfest and Paris Popfest, will release the full album on September 4 in physical formats.
