Next Week’s Washing – “Where Did I Go Wrong” | Growing without having all the answers

“Where Did I Go Wrong” turns personal uncertainty into an experience that grows alongside the music. The second preview of Next Week’s Washing’s upcoming EP begins with a question directed inward: when did the path become unclear, and what remains of the person you once expected to become? The Toronto band finds in that doubt a mixture of introspection, melancholy, and a persistent need to keep moving.

The lyrics avoid searching for someone to blame, focusing instead on the distance between past and present. An old friend reflected in the mirror turns memory into something both familiar and distant, while the “turnstile” introduces an image of constant transition. That movement eventually becomes a loss of control, yet no definitive answer arrives. The real shift happens when uncertainty stops feeling like nothing but weight and begins to become momentum.

Shoegaze building toward catharsis

The track begins in relative restraint, with the vocal and central riff occupying the foreground before layers of guitars gradually add density and scale. Shoegaze expands the atmosphere, while alternative rock and post-punk tension keep the song moving. The new outro developed with Dylan Frankland becomes a fitting sonic release for the conflict at the song’s center.

A question that remains open

“I’m still looking at you” acts as a fixed point while everything around it continues to move. That tension between staying and moving forward defines the track: not knowing exactly where you are going does not necessarily mean you are standing still. Next Week’s Washing turns uncertainty into motion, and ultimately into catharsis.
