Led by Andy Butler, the eight-track project features Faris Badwan and Hips & Lips while tracing memories, spaces, and figures from queer nightlife culture.
Hercules & Love Affair releases “Danseur” via Stratasonic Records, completing an eight-track project that moves through different layers of queer nightlife history on both sides of the Atlantic. Led by Andy Butler, the project draws from spaces such as London’s Blitz and Taboo, as well as the people and scenes that transformed nightlife into spaces for identity, connection, and expression. Its second installment features Faris Badwan of The Horrors and Hips & Lips, while tracks such as “Night on the Town” look further back to the story of two women who lived openly during the 1960s. “Pirouette” closes the project with a tribute to SOPHIE and Aerea Negrot, two important figures in Butler’s world who died within months of one another. The project also connects with its first installment through “Boy”, a Book of Love cover conceived as a tribute to New York’s BoyBar.
Memory becomes a central part of “Danseur”, which is dedicated to Jeffrey Hinton, Taboo resident DJ, photographer, and queer filmmaker whose personal archive of late-1980s and early-1990s nightlife appears throughout the physical release. Images of spaces including Heaven and Alternative Miss World, preserved in part through scans of printed photographs, place the project in conversation with a culture documented from within. Hinton and Princess Julia join Butler for a series of conversations about queer underground culture and electronic music, while an additional Q&A with Pet Shop Boys explores how synthesizer music transformed nightlife and the culture surrounding it. Created with Elín Ey of Hips & Lips and Quinn Whalley of Paranoid London, the project expands the chemistry established on Someone Else Is Calling, built around their shared affinity for acid house, disco, and darker electronic music. For nearly two decades, Hercules & Love Affair has used dance music to explore queer identity, intimacy, loss, and collective liberation; on “Danseur”, those themes meet the testimonies, images, and memories of the people who gave those spaces their meaning.
