The Norwegian artist turns heartbreak, boundaries and conflicting perspectives into an intense new electronic pop single.
Moyka, the project of Norwegian artist Monika Engeseth, shares “Villain of Your Story,” a new electronic pop single built around the tension between personal boundaries and the stories other people tell about us. Following “Icarus” and “Moon,” the track moves through shimmering synths, pulsing rhythms and Moyka’s intimate vocal delivery, gradually shifting from uncertainty into something rawer and more self-assured. The song emerged after Moyka parted ways with a close collaborator, leaving her trying to understand how the same experience could be interpreted so differently from each side. Rather than attempting to establish who was right, she found a different perspective: accepting that she could be the hero of her own story while becoming the villain in someone else’s. That realization became the emotional center of the track and a way of reclaiming control over how she responds to a situation she can no longer change.
Writing “Villain of Your Story” also prompted Moyka to recognize patterns that had appeared before in both romantic and family relationships. That deeper reflection gives the song an intimate core beneath its expansive electronic production, while its villain imagery becomes a deliberately confrontational way of embracing the role others may have assigned to her. The single arrives ahead of BULLSEYE, Moyka’s forthcoming album, due October 16, and follows the Ultraviolet mini-EP and an expanding international presence. In November, she will bring this new chapter to Latin America, with appearances at Corona Capital in Mexico City and Fauna Primavera in Santiago, Chile. “Villain of Your Story” is released through her own label, MOYKA (ADA Nordics/Warner Music Norway).
