Lauri Sukanen Turns the Finnish Winter into Cinematic Country Rock with “20 Hour Sleep”

The Finnish songwriter transforms the seasonal darkness of Northern Finland into a song where alternative country meets atmospheric rock.

“20 Hour Sleep” takes the winter darkness of Northern Finland as its raw material. The new single from Lauri Sukanen, originally from Oulu and now based in Tampere, turns the experience of lightless days into a cinematic country rock piece built from spacious arrangements, warm analogue textures and understated melodies. Moving between alternative country, atmospheric rock and the shadowy elegance of Nordic noir, the song captures the sensation of living through a winter that alters the perception of time: going to sleep at dawn, waking late in the afternoon and gradually allowing darkness to dictate the rhythm of everyday life. Rather than presenting the song as a portrait of clinical depression, Sukanen recreates the strange feeling of inhabiting a self-created winter haze that slowly begins to lift as ordinary routines return.

The musician’s history within Finland’s independent scene also informs this sonic direction. Before developing his solo project, Sukanen performed with the indie rock bands Mushmouthed Talk and Seacorner, while his years working as a recording and sound engineer are reflected in the meticulous attention to detail of his productions. “20 Hour Sleep” once again features Eelis Lantto on drums, Matti Niemi on upright bass and Nikolaus Tiiro on keyboards, the same lineup heard on his previous single, “Viper”. Production is again handled by Janne Huotari, whose restrained yet expansive approach gives the track its cinematic depth. Here, Americana drifts north while country rock dissolves into Arctic twilight, creating an atmosphere suspended somewhere between memory and sleep.
