Head Full of Stars – “Fear of Flying” | Shoegaze and post-rock between unease, suspension and wonder

Briefly waking up on a plane full of sleeping passengers to discover the Northern Lights turns an ordinary journey into something almost unreal. “Fear of Flying” takes that experience from William Bernhard and reshapes it into an instrumental journey where flying at night means remaining suspended between places, states of consciousness and sensations that resist easy definition. The track does not attempt to literally recreate the flight; it captures the strangeness of experiencing it.

Takeoff, waiting, turbulence and landing become stages in a journey shaped by anticipation and unease, but also contemplation and wonder. Being physically surrounded by people while feeling completely alone, watching something that seems to belong to another world, gives the experience an unusual intimacy. The absence of vocals through most of the track leaves that feeling open rather than imposing a definitive interpretation. Only at the end does a brief coda repeat “wake up” and “it’s OK,” like a distant signal guiding the listener back to solid ground.

A flight built from atmosphere

Moving through shoegaze, psychedelic rock and post-rock, Head Full of Stars develops the track as a predominantly atmospheric instrumental. Shoegaze immersion, psychedelic expansiveness and post-rock’s gradual sense of movement allow sound to represent the journey without words. The closing vocal coda briefly breaks that suspension and becomes an emotional point of return.

Between sleep and waking

The nighttime flight becomes a metaphor for existing between two states: neither fully asleep nor awake, neither at the point of departure nor yet at the destination. The Northern Lights intensify that feeling of witnessing something outside ordinary experience. At the end, “wake up” and “it’s OK” become a form of emotional landing: after turbulence and wonder, the track finds calm in returning to reality.
