“Flying Monkeys” turns leaving a psychologically controlling relationship into a process of rebuilding identity. The narrator moves through isolation, lost autonomy, and damaged trust before reaching a deeper question: how can she recover the person she was before the harm? The image of a room without doors transforms domestic space into a representation of emotional confinement, while the distance “from here to the moon” expresses how difficult it can be to create real separation.
The idea of “flying monkeys” adds another unsettling layer: even people who might belong to a support network can become caught, consciously or unconsciously, within controlling dynamics. Against that setting, the repeated line “I remember who I used to be” changes the song’s emotional center. Memory stops being nostalgia and becomes a way of reclaiming autonomy.
Progressive Rock and Art Pop Sensibility
Situated between modern progressive rock and adult contemporary, “Flying Monkeys” belongs to the creative world of EPIC DEPARTURE, where Tremeau combines melodic rock with an open-ended art-pop approach. Her work can incorporate alternative folk, R&B, disco, electronic, and classical elements when the composition calls for them.
Memory as a Tool for Rebuilding
The lyrics move from confinement toward the possibility of escape: an underground space, a lock, and the absence of doors represent different forms of entrapment. “Grey-rock” introduces another layer of self-protection. By the end, erasing “the mistake that was me and you” becomes more than separation; it becomes an act of reclaiming the ability to decide what comes next.
