Honey VHS – “Never Left The Ground” | The weight of never arriving

“Never Left The Ground” turns a simple image into a measure of time: remaining on the ground when you once expected to be somewhere else. Brooklyn independent band Honey VHS builds an indie folk song around dependence, autonomy, and the distance between the person we imagined becoming and the person we ultimately inhabit. Its melancholy never reaches for a triumphant resolution; instead, it stays with that discomfort.

The lyrics emerge from a relationship shaped by vulnerability and an uneven balance of power. The narrator describes himself as a ghost while a hand seems to pass through him and exert control. Later, that hand can no longer reach him in the same way. Freedom arrives, but so does a lingering disappointment: becoming free from someone does not necessarily mean reaching the place you once expected to be.

Intimate folk for a story of dependence
