Mara – “Anchors” | Finding something to hold on to in the middle of the storm

Calm does not always mean everything is alright. Sometimes, it is where unspoken tension begins to gather. On “Anchors,” Mara creates an emotional landscape of storms, oceans, and unsettling silences. The lyrical imagery suggests a mind worn down by its own struggles, while also revealing a need for affection: when everything feels too vast to comprehend, finding something to hold on to can become a way forward.

The ocean evokes an emotional depth that feels both overwhelming and threatening, while the plea for love introduces a vulnerability that contrasts with the harshness of the storm. This is not necessarily about escaping the darkness, but about finding a way to live within it without losing touch with others.

Shoegaze, post-metal, and post-rock for lingering unease

Mara’s shadowy atmospheres and slow-building textures connect with shoegaze, post-metal, and post-rock. This approach complements a narrative in which tension accumulates without an immediate resolution, like a calm surface hiding a storm. Harm Peters on drums and Stefan De Graef and Thomas Michiels on vocals also connect the single to the project’s creative roots.

An anchor can also be a question

Inspired by his connection with Psychonaut, Gert Stockmans finds in “Anchors” a meeting point between his musical beginnings and Mara’s own identity. The title suggests a compelling contradiction: what keeps us grounded can also prevent us from moving forward. The song leaves that tension unresolved, searching for connection within the darkness.
