Anger can become a fantasy of destruction when the world seems impossible to repair. In “tabula rasa,” Brooklyn duo CONCUSSA transforms that feeling into an apocalyptic landscape where violence, ashes, and darkness coexist with a search for identity. Inspired by the killing of Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis in January 2026, the song emerges from an emotional response that develops into a more intimate question: what remains of us when everything seems lost?
Images of dead stars, flames, and inevitable endings shape a narrative of collapse. The repeated declaration that “It’s over” reinforces this perception, yet the desire to understand oneself and become a source of light introduces another possibility. Destruction becomes an extreme expression of helplessness, but also an imagined setting from which transformation might begin.
From cinematic trip-pop to heavier rock
CONCUSSA retains its affinity for dark atmospheres and sonic experimentation while introducing more forceful hard rock arrangements. Influences such as Portishead, Massive Attack, Sade, and Radiohead help situate the duo’s sound between emotional depth and sonic exploration. The result pushes their trip-pop identity into heavier territory without sacrificing its cinematic character.
What might emerge from the ashes
The title, referring to a blank slate, carries a contradiction: to begin again, the song first imagines the disappearance of everything familiar. Yet beneath its nihilistic vision, the desire for self-understanding introduces a vulnerability that prevents the track from becoming a simple expression of despair. “tabula rasa” explores the tension between wanting to erase an unbearable world and finding, within its ruins, a different way to inhabit it.
