willoh – “HARSH” | Finding beauty in the rough edges of identity

Growing up also means learning to live with the parts of ourselves that do not quite fit. On “HARSH,” willoh continues exploring the contradictions of an identity in motion, using experimentation to express the uncertainty of becoming someone new. The single appears on BUCK, an EP the Springfield, Missouri artist describes as her most honest work to date—a confrontation with the parts of herself that are difficult to accept but ultimately help define who she is.

The song’s personality finds a parallel in its vocal treatment: a distorted, gritty delivery that adds roughness without sacrificing the immediate appeal of the music. The voice does not need to sound polished to connect; its texture becomes part of the character, allowing imperfection to take center stage. This balance between accessibility and friction reflects the tension running through BUCK: trying to understand who you are while discovering sides of yourself you would rather keep hidden. As the title suggests, roughness does not have to be a flaw. It can become a form of expression.

Hyperpop and alternative rock with the edges intact

Moving between hyperpop, alt-pop, and alternative rock, willoh develops a language that resists rigid labels. The distorted, gritty vocals give the song a raw identity, while its pop sensibility keeps it within reach. The result creates an appealing tension between experimentation and intimacy.

Imperfection as identity

With BUCK, willoh approaches self-discovery as a messy process, far removed from any idea of a perfect transformation. “HARSH” belongs to that search: accepting who you are also means recognizing the rough edges that shape you, without having to smooth them out to make them easier to understand.
