Nellen Dryden – “Mermaid Blues” | Finding refuge in emotional depths

There are inner places where sadness no longer feels like something we need to hide. On “Mermaid Blues,” Nellen Dryden uses the figure of a mermaid to explore an intimate space where solitude can become shelter and emotions are free to exist without explanation. The ocean represents a world of one’s own, removed from the expectations of the surface, where self-recognition does not require pretending or translating every feeling for someone else.

Yet remaining beneath the surface does not mean giving up on human connection. The narrator also longs for light, sunshine, and time spent with someone close. This contradiction keeps the song from romanticizing isolation: even when distance helps us understand ourselves, we can still crave companionship. The possibility of recognizing other people as mermaids introduces a sense of belonging, too. Perhaps the very qualities that make us feel different can become the point of connection with those who understand how we experience the world.

Retro-soul with an atmospheric sensibility

Dryden describes the song as a retro-soul ballad with an atmospheric twist, balancing a classic orientation with an introspective character. Its instrumentation brings together piano, harpsichord, and vocals performed by Dryden, alongside guitar, percussion, banjo, and bass played by Jules Belmont. The two share production, mixing, and engineering duties, while Andrew Goldring handles mastering.

The freedom to recognize yourself

“Mermaid Blues” suggests that the need for refuge and the desire for closeness can coexist. Through its oceanic metaphor, Nellen Dryden transforms melancholy into a search for recognition. We do not always need to leave our depths behind; sometimes, we simply need to discover who else knows how to inhabit them.
