Allegories – “Glorious Vanity” | Experimental Electronics and the Beauty of Impermanence

What remains of a song when its original composition disappears? Allegories approaches that question through “Glorious Vanity,” an ethereal piece where experimentation turns an initial idea into something entirely unfamiliar. The centerpiece of By Accident, On Purpose began as a ukulele composition by Adam Bentley and Jordan Mitchell, which they subsequently dismantled and rebuilt using electronic elements. Only the title survived the process, making the track the clearest expression of the duo’s willingness to abandon familiar structures in pursuit of new possibilities.

The lyrics place an awareness of mortality alongside the desire to find reasons to smile. “Can somebody smile” sits beside images of overwhelming exposure and toasts to difficult moments, while the recurring phrase “It’s glorious vanity” shifts between celebration and irony. Rather than resolving these contradictions, the song suggests that our ambitions can be fragile or absurd without losing their capacity to create beauty. Its ambiguity allows the track to function as a meditation on existence, but also as an invitation to loosen our grip on outcomes.

Ethereal Textures Beyond the Original Form

Moving between experimental electronics, dream pop, and shoegaze, the track prioritizes transformation over fidelity to its first version. It represents the album’s most atmospheric side within a broader exploration of fragmented pop structures and electronic experimentation.

Finding Beauty in Letting Go

Allegories turns creative deviation into an artistic statement. “Glorious Vanity” draws its meaning from that tension: an idea can lose its original shape and still discover a new reason to exist.
