Some Days Are Darker – “NDRI” | Dark Wave Between Desire and Self-Destruction

Seeking genuine connection can become a struggle against our own feelings. On “NDRI,” Some Days Are Darker turns that contradiction into a dark, atmospheric track where the desire for intimacy collides with the instinct to build emotional defenses. Moving between gothic rock, electronics, and dark wave, the New York trio gradually intensifies the tension before releasing it through an expansive chorus. The single introduces the emotional territory of Black Box Warning, their forthcoming album.

Flowers in a shared room evoke an intimacy beginning to fall apart, while the desire to turn to stone represents an attempt to protect oneself from pain. Yet the body continues to seek contact. This opposition reveals the song’s central conflict: becoming emotionally hardened may prevent certain wounds, but it also creates distance from the experiences we crave. The question of whether we want to feel or simply avoid suffering becomes unsettling when the song acknowledges that the things we desire can also destroy us.

Dark Electronics and Cinematic Tension

A persistent electronic pulse anchors the atmosphere as the arrangement builds toward a broad chorus and cathartic finale. Gothic rock and dark wave provide sonic density without reducing vulnerability to a mere aesthetic device.

The Cost of Feeling Again

“NDRI” refuses to portray desire as either salvation or absolute ruin. Some Days Are Darker explores a deeply human contradiction: opening ourselves up involves risk, but protecting ourselves from everything also means giving up the possibility of profound connection.
