Who pays the price when someone’s success depends on others losing? In “Lines”, Fayen questions a logic that shapes both personal relationships and broader social structures: placing individual gain above collective well-being while trusting that the consequences will eventually disappear. Images of extracting diamonds, taking land, and drawing water from someone else’s well position ambition against questions of responsibility and what we are willing to sacrifice to get what we want.
The line “We never see each other the way we see ourselves” captures another central tension. Our perception of who we are does not always match the experiences of those around us. That distance can conceal inequality, justify harmful decisions, and make it harder to acknowledge the damage we cause. Nor does the promise of a better future guarantee change. When we build brick by brick on the same foundations, history risks repeating itself. Fayen leaves open the possibility of breaking that cycle, though doing so requires questioning what we have inherited.
Reflection Through Folk
Moving between folk, Americana, and folk pop, “Lines” uses everyday imagery and recurring phrases to sustain its contemplative perspective. The return to its central idea reinforces the tension between perception, empathy, and responsibility.
The Marks We Leave Behind
The song encourages us to look beyond our intentions and consider how our decisions affect others. Building a different future begins with recognizing the lines that divide us and deciding what we are willing to change.
