Bending Backwards – “Bend You Out of Shape” | Euphoric post-punk about the influence of intimacy

A group of kids riding bicycles, whispered insults, small acts of rebellion, and an afternoon seemingly free of consequences provide the starting point for “Bend You Out of Shape.” Bending Backwards takes this childhood imagery and turns it toward something considerably more complicated: the way people close to us can reshape our identities. Working with only vocals, guitar, and drums, the Copenhagen trio turns that question into a noisy, restless, and surprisingly danceable track.

The idea of bending someone out of shape introduces a tension that reaches beyond friendship. The narrator wonders whether her own closeness is putting too much pressure on another person, yet the song never defines what an original or “real” shape would actually be. That may be its most interesting observation: intimacy inevitably involves some degree of transformation. The childhood scenes—bikes, friends gathering at home, whispered insults, and minor acts of mischief—become an early version of adult relationships, where affection, complicity, and influence are rarely kept completely separate.

Post-punk between noise and euphoria

Distorted guitars and forceful drums drive the track toward noise rock territory, while the rapidly delivered vocals give the song an almost physical urgency. At points, the drumming approaches a drum’n’bass pulse, expanding the momentum of a track that rarely seems willing to stand still. One of its strongest qualities is the trio’s ability to create such a large dynamic range from an intentionally stripped-down setup.

How much can we change someone?

The title provides the metaphor holding the song together. Even the story behind Halfdan’s guitar—borrowed from Johannes, modified, decorated, and eventually regarded as his own—accidentally echoes the same ideas of intervention, transformation, and ownership. “Bend You Out of Shape” never answers how much we can alter the people we love before changing them beyond recognition. Instead, it leaves us with a more difficult question: if intimacy means connecting deeply with another person, perhaps changing each other is unavoidable.
