The San Francisco quartet examines the uneasy relationship between capitalism, artistic creation and music-industry success on their upcoming album.

Imperial Teen have released “Hands All Up”, the latest single from All Over You, their forthcoming album due October 9 via Merge Records. The song sits within one of the record’s central concerns: the uneasy relationship between capitalism and the creation of art. As Will Schwartz explains, Imperial Teen want their music to make people dance, think and feel at the same time, and “Hands All Up” channels that idea through the rush surrounding success in the music industry and the disappointment that can follow it. The track captures the tension between those two experiences while retaining the group’s instinct for catchy melodies, pop energy and an irreverent edge.

Formed in San Francisco more than three decades ago, Imperial Teen are Roddy Bottum, Will Schwartz, Jone Stebbins and Lynn Truell. All Over You expands their palette through boy/girl harmonies, bubblegum pop, electronic beats, grungy distortion, power-pop anthems and sharp lyricism. Their collaborative process continues to rely on periodic writing retreats followed by recording sessions separated by distance and changing schedules, giving the album an episodic quality shaped by moments created across different periods. The band will support the release with a US headline tour beginning October 14 in Los Angeles, with stops in San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Boston, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Durham.
