At two in the morning, silence can make every thought feel much larger. “Underwater,” the lead single from Inevitable, Awake & Dreaming’s debut album, settles into that nocturnal space where a conversation with yourself can reveal what remains hidden during the day. Moving through bedroom pop, indie pop, and dark pop, the track builds a restrained atmosphere around a difficult decision: letting go of what weighs you down before it pulls you under completely.
The image of a whale floating too far beneath the water turns that emotional conflict into an almost surreal scene of isolation. It is an enormous creature that, despite its scale, tries to communicate through a code no one seems able to hear. That contradiction reflects the narrator’s emotional state: feeling trapped inside something immense while being unable to find a clear way to ask for help. “Let it go or swallow you whole” captures the dilemma between releasing what hurts and allowing it to consume everything.
A song built from emotional depth
The production moves between Bedroom Pop, Lo-fi Pop, Indie Pop, and Dark Pop, balancing intimacy with a sense of scale. The feeling of being “underwater” works both as an emotional metaphor and as part of the song’s sonic identity, while references to Radiohead, Billie Eilish, and AURORA place it within a more contemplative strain of alternative pop.
Returning to the body
Against that feeling of sinking, the song introduces another possibility: “take up space,” “be in your bones,” “call them home.” The journey therefore becomes less about simply escaping and more about finding a way back to oneself. There is no immediate resolution, but there is movement—a fragile return toward the self, still surrounded by uncertainty.
