Silence can become its own way of hurting someone. “I Say” builds on that contradiction, exploring what happens when feelings remain trapped before they can become language. Vestigo creates an intimate piece around regret and frustration, focusing on the difficulty of communicating what is happening internally. The line “I never hurt you with my words / Only the lack thereof” captures the song’s emotional tension: the absence of expression can carry consequences of its own. Moving through bedroom pop, lo-fi pop, alternative/indie R&B and alt pop, the track turns the struggle to speak into its central point of departure.
The image of a “bottomless pit” expands that search into an emotional space with no apparent end, where the narrator tries to understand something they still cannot fully name. Repeating “I say / And I feel / So I say” creates a gradual movement: feeling leads to speaking, while speaking becomes a way of investigating what remains unresolved. That tension may resonate with anyone who has learned that staying silent does not necessarily prevent conflict, and that finding the right words sometimes begins with admitting that we do not yet understand everything we feel.
Repetition as a language of its own
Bedroom pop, lo-fi pop, alternative/indie R&B and alt pop provide an intimate framework for the writing. The recurring “I say” and “I feel” create a circular structure that mirrors the process of returning to an emotion until it becomes possible to articulate it.
From silence into the depths
The “bottomless pit” becomes the song’s defining metaphor: falling without reaching the bottom reflects an emotional experience whose origins remain hidden. Against that descent, Vestigo turns expression into movement. Even transforming those feelings into a song becomes meaningful here—when direct communication fails, music becomes the space where the words can finally emerge.
