A song written before a loss can take on a different meaning once that loss becomes real. “Until You Have No Choice,” featuring Walt Phelan, was written roughly two weeks before a member of Salo Pallini lost their home, instruments and recording equipment in a fire. That event does not fully explain the song, but it changes the resonance of its themes: waiting and continuing forward feel different when rebuilding is no longer an abstract idea.
The lyrics place that waiting against a world that “keeps burning up.” Someone travels on a “warm array of light” toward the night while another person remains behind, waiting. The tension between “You have a choice in the matter” and the possibility of eventually reaching a point where there is no alternative turns the track into a meditation on choice, fate and persistence. The image of fruit that must be taken before it is gone introduces urgency, while the warning to a “sister” reinforces the need to act. In the middle of uncertainty, waiting itself becomes a decision.
Psychedelic rock for crossing the distance
Indie Rock, Alternative Rock and Psychedelic Rock connect the track to Salo Pallini’s instrumental roots while opening a new vocal chapter. Walt Phelan’s performance shifts some of the narrative weight toward the voice, while images of light, night and cities expand the song’s spacious quality.
Waiting while the world keeps burning
The light leading toward night contains the song’s central paradox: hope can also move toward the unknown. “Until You Have No Choice” offers neither an easy arrival nor a guaranteed destination. Its most meaningful gesture is persistence—waiting for someone while everything around you changes, and trusting that the waiting may still lead toward a meeting.
