An unnamed impulse runs through “A Strange Vice,” turning desire into something more unsettling: a force that leaves a mark, feeds anger and seems impossible to control. Federale steps away from some of its earlier cinematic complexity here, opting for something more immediate without abandoning the darkness that defines its world. The result balances menace, sensuality and movement, allowing a song about frustration to feel like a form of physical release.
The narrator’s “strange vice” becomes an open-ended image for obsession, loss of control and whatever remains inside us long after it should be gone. That tension takes on a social dimension through the song’s connection to economic inequality, the political climate in the United States, skilled workers being replaced by technology and the helplessness that comes with problems that seem impossible to change. The mark left by an experience can become desire, trauma or anger; the song deliberately keeps those boundaries blurred.
Goth-pop built for release
Post-Punk, Indie Rock, goth, new wave and garage rock converge around Collin Hegna’s baritone, bright new-wave guitars, Prophet-5 synths and bass lines that sustain the shadowy atmosphere. The expansive outro turns that accumulated tension into a hypnotic climax that feels equally suited to the live setting.
What refuses to stop burning
Drawing from the imagery of Giallo cinema, the song turns an inner mark into a symbol of something that refuses to disappear. Its atmospheric outro does not resolve the wound or cleanly release the tension; it simply extends it. That restraint becomes one of the track’s strengths: “A Strange Vice” does not need to fully release its anger for us to feel it.
