Stefan Kristinkov – “Wood, Air, Metal, Repeat” | Turning a single clarinet into a sonic laboratory

What happens when the thing you lack stops being an obstacle and becomes the material for creation? “Wood, Air, Metal, Repeat” grows from that question, developed by Stefan Kristinkov while working on the soundtrack for an upcoming independent film. What began as a personal exercise inspired by a scene became an exploration of how far one resource could be pushed: a single B-flat clarinet.

The piece follows that premise all the way through. Key clicks, finger percussion, multiphonics and conventional clarinet playing provide the raw material, which is then processed through sampling and resynthesis. Those transformations gradually detach the recordings from the instrument’s familiar identity, turning them into textures and effects that no longer depend on conventional expectations of what a clarinet should sound like. The method becomes part of the meaning: instead of waiting for the sounds he needs, Kristinkov builds them himself.

From instrument to electronic material

Moving through Nu Jazz, Jazztronica, IDM/Glitch and Ambient, the track’s experimental character comes not from adding more sound sources, but from exploring one source in depth. The clarinet becomes melodic instrument, percussive object and electronic raw material, while sampling and resynthesis expand its vocabulary into a distinct sonic palette.

Wood, air, metal — then back again

The title traces the clarinet through its physical dimensions before returning to the beginning. That repetition also describes the creative process: take the same object, approach it from different angles and keep discovering what else it can become. Limitation turns into a tool for invention. When something is missing, the piece suggests, it may be possible to build it yourself.
