Deniz Cuylan – “Big Blue” | Experimental electronic music between memory, the sea and contemplation

“Big Blue” presents Deniz Cuylan in a mode where experimental electronic music becomes a space for contemplation. Featuring lyrics by Sarah La Puerta, the song revolves around maritime imagery, memories and an emotional presence that remains as the voice seems to drift toward sleep. Its downtempo character encourages a patient listen, allowing repetition and atmosphere to give each phrase an almost hypnotic weight. The single appears on For Luca, Cuylan’s third album released by Hush Hush Records, continuing an exploration that has moved through classical guitar, piano and strings.

The ocean works as an extension of memory. Shifting tides, shores and seeds floating across the water evoke recollections that surface without a clearly defined direction, while the voice remains suspended between wakefulness and sleep. “I do think of you” captures that persistence: there is no definitive resolution to absence, only an acceptance that someone continues to occupy an emotional space. The sea exists around the narrator, but also within, turning memory into a presence that is difficult to separate from the present.

The sea as memory

The repetition of “The sea around, the sea within” deepens the relationship between external landscape and inner experience. The ocean stops being merely a setting and becomes an emotional condition, capable of representing something that changes without completely disappearing.

A suspended listening experience

The downtempo approach prioritizes space, texture and slow movement. The vocal performance complements Cuylan’s experimental sensibility and allows the song to find calm within melancholy, connecting with anyone who recognizes how certain memories remain even after a relationship or chapter of life has changed.
