The Lael Project releases “It’s About Soul”, a posthumous Lael Summer single supporting mental health awareness

The reimagined version of one of Lael Summer’s most celebrated songs continues her legacy of advocacy, healing, and suicide prevention through music.

The Lael Project has released “It’s About Soul,” the seventh posthumous single from New York singer-songwriter Lael Summer, available now via True Groove Records. Originally released in 2013, the song returns in a newly reworked version produced by longtime collaborators Tomás Doncker and James Dellatacoma, featuring vocals sourced from a live performance at New York City’s iconic Blue Note. The recording is further elevated by contributions from The Specials Horns and the late keyboard legend Amp Fiddler, highlighting the charisma, vulnerability, and empowerment that defined Lael’s artistry.

The release also continues the work of The Lael Project, the nonprofit founded by artist and activist Marla Mase to honour her daughter’s life and use her music as a platform for mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Lael Summer, who passed away in 2017 at the age of 24, devoted much of her music to themes of resilience, healing, and emotional honesty. Through “It’s About Soul,” her voice continues to inspire new conversations around mental health while supporting educational initiatives, advocacy campaigns, and community programs dedicated to reminding people that help, connection, and hope remain within reach.
