Sunken Cages – Drum and Flowers | Rhythm as a form of gathering

There are cultural expressions that need no translation to create an immediate connection. Sunken Cages explores that ability in “Drum and Flowers”, a piece that turns percussion into a meeting point where different generations and experiences can recognize one another through a shared pulse. The result is a work that treats rhythm as a living element capable of carrying collective memory forward.

Inspired by rituals surrounding the Idakka drum, the track reclaims communal practices as spaces of connection and continuity. The flowers placed upon the instrument become a gesture of respect toward a tradition that does not remain static, but instead finds new ways to converse with the present while preserving its original meaning.

A sonic language that expands electronic music

One of the project’s most compelling aspects lies in how Ravish Momin rethinks the tools of electronic production. Rather than using folk elements as decoration, he develops a personal methodology where traditional percussion becomes the foundation that shapes the entire composition.

His artistic journey also adds a distinctive dimension to this approach. For more than two decades, he has built electronic instruments inspired by South Indian percussion and has extended that research into collaborations with jazz musicians, dance productions and multidisciplinary projects.

A celebration of what continues to evolve

“Drum and Flowers” stands out by reminding us that some traditions survive because they remain in motion. Sunken Cages creates a piece that understands music as a shared act and finds in rhythm a way to strengthen the ties between past, present and community.
