Wedding – “Robots” | The Paradox of Being in Control

Denying a dependency doesn’t mean escaping it. On “Robots,” Wedding, the musical project of Walt Mudie, turns that contradiction into the starting point for a song about our relationship with technology. The repeated line “The robots do not control me” begins as a declaration of independence, but its certainty gradually falls apart.

The narrator moves from defending their autonomy to admitting that robots might be making them less intelligent, eventually questioning their own identity. Nothing gets resolved. The harder they try to draw a line between themselves and the machines, the less clear that distinction becomes.

Spoken Word and Experimental Electronics for a Fractured Identity

Repetition and subtle shifts in the narrator’s statements drive “Robots.” Its dark, unsettling tone accompanies a narrative that moves between anxiety, frustration, and an unusual sense of humor. Within Wedding’s broader sound, where twee-leaning bedroom pop meets nervous electronic textures and studio experimentation, the single takes a distinctly conceptual turn.

When the Tool Starts Changing Us

Rather than offering a conventional critique of technology, “Robots” raises a more uncomfortable possibility: perhaps the question isn’t just who controls the machines, but how much they have already changed the way we think and define ourselves.
