Hansom Ēli – “Sip ’26” | Even the apocalypse can wait

As the planet deteriorates, everyday life carries on as if there were still plenty of time. On “Sip ’26,” Canadian duo Hansom Ēli turn that contradiction into a dark satire of climate crisis, consumerism, and the fantasy of escaping the consequences. Images of drinking glaciers, searching for oases, and contemplating a move to Mars create an unsettling future where survival coexists with comfort and promises of technological salvation.

The repeated phrase “in a few years” captures the song’s central criticism: the familiar habit of postponing action under the illusion that disaster still belongs to the future. As environmental destruction looms, flights, investments, and leisure keep an increasingly difficult version of normality running. Mars becomes an extraordinary escape route, but also a way to look away from problems here on Earth. The song does not present technological hope as an easy solution; instead, it questions how readily we imagine another destination while avoiding responsibility for the present.

Indie rock facing an uncertain future

Moving between indie rock, indie pop, and alternative rock, “Sip ’26” uses apocalyptic imagery and social irony to shape its narrative. The single appears on The Hybrid Tapes, an album recorded in live takes over three days at Studio Mixart in Montreal, with an audience present.

Escape as a symptom

Hansom Ēli sets the fantasy of leaving Earth against the material reality of living on it. The actions of building, breaking, and burning suggest a cycle of progress and destruction worth questioning. The song draws its strength from this tension: the future may seem distant, but the consequences of our choices are already part of the present.
