Mercedes Brown Releases “No Tomorrow,” an Alternative Rock Song About Cherishing the Present

The Wet’suwet’en and Tsimshian artist reveals a more reflective side of her debut album Light the Fire as “Playing With Fire” reaches No. 1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown.

Mercedes Brown releases “No Tomorrow,” a single from her debut album Light the Fire, out through Small Frog Records. The song grew from a memory of walking with her father, who encouraged her to stop and appreciate the wildflowers. Years later, his words became a reflection on recognizing the value of what is already around us before time changes it. In contrast to the driving energy of her debut single, “Playing With Fire,” the new track reveals a gentler, more introspective side of the Wet’suwet’en and Tsimshian alternative rocker. Its message centers on enjoying the present and appreciating the people we love. The song began as a poem Brown wrote during a class before she returned to it weeks later and developed it into a full composition. Recorded at Ukee Sound in February 2026 with her uncle and producer Brent Halfyard, the track combines acoustic guitar, bass, keys, and drums with an unexpected production detail: a shift from an old-time radio effect into a cleaner, contemporary sound, reflecting the movement between memory and the present.

The release arrives as “Playing With Fire” reaches No. 1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown, marking a significant moment in Brown’s first year as a recording artist. Her second single, “So What?,” has also earned attention, including placement on Apple Music’s Indigenous Now playlist. Brown’s Wet’suwet’en and Tsimshian heritage and family connections inform her music, particularly on “Kwin nedïhk’ayh (Home Awaits You),” the closing track of Light the Fire, co-written with her aunt and uncle Denise and Brent Halfyard and featuring Wet’suwet’en language. Her artistic identity is also shaped by the alternative rock of the 1990s, which she discovered through her father’s influence. Following performances across British Columbia, including shows alongside other emerging artists, Brown is already developing new material. With “No Tomorrow,” she offers a reminder to slow down, pay attention to what is close, and cherish the time we share with others.
