Sammy Weissberg – “Brass Quintet No. 1 Mvt. II” | When Brass Gives Melancholy a Voice

With “Brass Quintet No. 1 Mvt. II”, Sammy Weissberg explores the expressive possibilities of chamber music, connecting his background in jazz and pop with a more elaborate instrumental approach. The second preview of Music for Strings and Brass, due out through Dear Life Records on November 13, the piece transforms a composition originally conceived for choir into a movement for brass quintet.

The intention to preserve a vocal quality in the melodies defines the work’s character. Inspired by the arrangements of Claus Ogerman and Gil Evans, Weissberg uses brass to create a melancholic atmosphere that needs no words to convey emotion. The composition invites listeners to approach music as an open language, where each phrase can evoke personal associations without imposing a single narrative.

Chamber Music Between Expression and Clarity

Weissberg’s writing combines harmonic richness and compositional detail with accessible melodies. His interest in brass arrangements allows him to transfer the expressiveness of singing to an instrumental ensemble, while his classical influences and experience in popular music expand the piece’s scope without sacrificing its melodic sensibility.

Listening to What Words Cannot Express

“Brass Quintet No. 1 Mvt. II” finds its strength in the ability to suggest rather than explain. Melancholy serves as its emotional starting point, leaving room for nostalgia, contemplation, and individual interpretation. Instead of telling a specific story, Weissberg creates an emotional space where timbre, harmony, and melodic movement help listeners recognize feelings that can be difficult to define.
