Next Week’s Washing – “Clear Eyes” | Moving Forward Without Knowing the Destination

Finding your own direction does not always mean knowing where you are going. In “Clear Eyes,” Next Week’s Washing turns that uncertainty into a reflection on time, identity, and the experience of growing up without having every answer. “We’ve not yet arrived” captures the feeling of remaining in transit, while “Time moves slow” expresses the impatience of processes that seem to take longer than expected. Rather than presenting clarity as absolute certainty, the song suggests moving forward even when the destination remains out of reach.

Images of travelers watching the landscape and a lighthouse guiding the way back introduce a quiet sense of hope. “We move together like the hands of the clock” expands this individual search into a shared experience: everyone follows their own path, yet all participate in the same movement. The phrase “Clear eyes below” leaves the meaning open, as if understanding the present also requires acknowledging what remains hidden.

Expansive Shoegaze with Melodies at the Forefront

The Toronto quintet expands its blend of shoegaze, post-punk, and indie rock through dense guitar layers and more ambitious instrumental arrangements. Immersive textures coexist with a voice placed prominently in the mix, allowing melodies to retain their clarity amid the intensity. A brief spoken passage, added spontaneously during recording, introduces another dimension to a composition balancing immersion with intimacy.

Keeping Moving Is Also an Answer

The first single from Next Week’s Washing’s second EP, due November 13, “Clear Eyes” treats growth as an ongoing process. The lighthouse does not choose the route; it offers a reference point for continuing. Through that image, the band finds a form of hope that does not depend on resolving every doubt, but on learning to move forward with uncertainty and recognizing that we are not alone along the way.
