Stinako – “I Have A Friend” | Finding Comfort in the Bonds That Sustain Us

Fortune is not always measured by what we achieve, but by the people and places that help us find meaning in life. In “I Have A Friend,” Stinako uses friendship as the starting point for a reflection on the different ways we can feel fortunate: family tenderness, childhood memories, and the possibility of finding shelter in chosen solitude. The friend at the heart of the song becomes a source of light, someone capable of restoring another person’s enthusiasm and helping them feel more at ease with their own existence.

Gratitude, however, does not erase melancholy. Thoughts about the passage of time and vulnerability in the face of illness remind us that everything we cherish remains subject to change. Yet the song refuses to let that awareness become despair. Gradually, its inventory of meaningful relationships and familiar places leads to a broader realization: being alive is itself a miracle. Recognizing this does not require ignoring life’s fragility, but learning to live alongside it.

Warm Vocals and an Expansive Crescendo

Moving between indie pop and folk pop, the song places Stina Koistinen’s warm voice at its center, accompanied by the subtle presence of Njet Njet 9, a mini big band whose brass section adds depth to the arrangement. The major chords, unusual within Koistinen’s melancholic songwriting, emphasize the tension between nostalgia and gratitude. Toward the end, a vocal and instrumental crescendo expands the song’s intimacy without sacrificing its delicacy.

Recognizing What Keeps Us Going

As the second single from Visions of Future, “I Have A Friend” offers a form of hope rooted in everyday life. Friendship, family, and places filled with memories matter not because they remain unchanged, but because they help us recognize ourselves as life unfolds. Sometimes, gratitude also means accepting that nothing is guaranteed.
