Riley Max – “What It Takes” | When loving someone is no longer enough to hold a relationship together

Waiting can become a quiet measure of how much remains in a relationship. On “What It Takes,” Riley Max focuses on the point where supporting someone through a difficult period stops feeling like a shared effort. “A day or a week or a month or a year or two” turns time into an emotional scale: the longer the waiting continues, the clearer it becomes that affection cannot always compensate for an imbalance in what two people are willing or able to give.

The song avoids turning that conflict into an accusation. Frustration exists alongside tenderness and compassion for someone caught in a difficult situation and seemingly unable to find a way out. A memory of staying up all night together introduces an image of an earlier intimacy, when remaining close still felt like something both people wanted. “It’s hard to need someone halfway” captures the exhaustion of needing someone who can no longer be present in the same way.

Indie pop built around emotional distance

Riley Max works within indie pop with a strong emphasis on songwriting and personal narrative. The intimate, conversational quality of the writing allows the emotional conflict to remain central, while the song’s place within the album connects it to a broader autobiographical exploration of growth and changing relationships.

The cost of staying

The title carries a double meaning. “What It Takes” can describe what is required to survive a difficult chapter, but also the emotional cost of remaining when the effort is no longer equally distributed. As part of an album written across five years, the track captures a stage of growth in which loving someone also means recognizing the limits of what one person can carry for another.
