Shansylvania – “Haunted Hotel” | When eternity is not enough to leave loss behind

The vampire in “Haunted Hotel” has found a way to spend the night: welcoming guests to an establishment where Halloween never ends. What he has not managed to do is move on from the person he lost. Shansylvania turns that contradiction into a supernatural folk-rock story, where immortality prolongs grief and macabre humor offers a way to live with sadness that time cannot resolve.

Born from a personal experience of loss, the song gives that emotion a character caught between everyday responsibilities and a memory that refuses to fade. He runs the hotel with a courtesy edged in sarcasm, yet his existence remains suspended in the past. Eternity, rather than a gift, means continuing to live without any guarantee of relief. The fantasy becomes recognizable in this tension: carrying on with daily life while someone’s absence retains its weight.

Folk rock among tombstones and theatrical shadows

The composition began with a melancholy piano riff before expanding into a fuller band arrangement. Drawing on indie folk, psychedelic folk, and bluegrass, Shansylvania combines American roots influences with theatrical storytelling and an energy designed to unfold onstage.

A refuge for those who cannot rest

Part of MonstroCity, Shannon Provost’s Halloween-themed folk-rock opera, “Haunted Hotel” turns the establishment into an extension of its protagonist’s emotional state. Guests come and go, but the receptionist remains, unable to close the door on his memories. Irony keeps the melancholy from becoming overly solemn, creating room for monsters to express deeply human conflicts. Sometimes, the real ghost does not need to appear; it is enough for the past to keep occupying the room.
