A smile, an accidental touch or afternoon light falling across someone’s eyes can suddenly feel overwhelming when friendship starts to become something else. “Alison” is built around that uncomfortable boundary: a confession rehearsed again and again but never spoken. Leah Jane Hendrix makes silence the emotional center of a story where getting closer also means risking something that already matters.
“Don’t wanna change so I pretend” captures the contradiction. Pretending nothing has changed protects the relationship, but it also forces the narrator to hide a feeling that becomes increasingly difficult to contain. Physical closeness creates emotional distance: being “right here next to you” does not prevent the narrator from feeling like a stranger, almost disappearing in plain sight as a way of preserving the friendship. The “golden hour” across Alison’s eyes becomes a mental photograph, while an accidental touch takes on a significance far beyond the gesture itself. The song ends without an explicit confession, and that is precisely where its strength lies: some emotions take up an entire inner world because they never find a way into words.
