“Getting a grip and letting it slip” captures the contradiction at the heart of “GET A GRIP”: regaining control and losing it can be part of the same motion. Ruby Waters begins with an overloaded mind, caught between losing track of time, searching everywhere for answers, and feeling close to the edge, yet she refuses to turn that state into rigid anxiety. Instead, the track becomes relaxed, sensual, and slightly chaotic—a reminder that stepping away can sometimes be its own form of recovery.
“I’m always falling” and “I’m tired of calling” express the exhaustion of trying to keep everything together. But the song shifts when desire and the possibility of simply wasting time with someone enter the picture. Calling that person a “ladder” introduces an image of support and escape, although the ambiguity remains: perhaps the narrator is climbing, perhaps falling, or perhaps finally allowing herself to drift. That tension between anxiety and relief gives the song its emotional shape.
A rough-edged mix for a restless state of mind
Starting from Bedroom / Lo-fi Pop, “GET A GRIP” expands into Alternative Rock, Dream Pop, Soul, and R&B. Waters’ raspy, expressive voice keeps the track organic while the production moves between ease, sensuality, and a slightly rougher edge. Its shifting musical language mirrors the changing emotional state.
Letting go as another kind of control
The title becomes an instruction the song continually questions. The image of excessive brightness that needs to be switched off suggests a need to escape sensory and mental overload, while the “ladder” offers a possible way out. The forest setting, bicycles, and time with friends in the video extend that sense of everyday freedom. “GET A GRIP” suggests that regaining balance does not always mean holding tighter—it can also mean knowing when to let yourself fall.
