Misery Prize – “Thought Police” | Electropunk confronting the surveillance of digital life

The “nee-naw” opening of “Thought Police” turns a police siren into the first signal of a song that views digital life through paranoia and dark humor. Misery Prize imagines a force capable of recording thoughts, policing language, and turning every online interaction into potential evidence. Blending Post-Punk, Electroclash, and Alternative Rock, the Yorkshire trio condenses that anxiety into a short, aggressive, deliberately uncomfortable track.

“I scroll therefore I am / I speak therefore I’m banned” captures its central contradiction. Scrolling through a screen begins to resemble a definition of existence, while speaking can become grounds for exclusion. The phone is no longer neutral; it becomes part of a system where algorithms, notifications, and platforms shape how people communicate and participate. The exaggeration gives the track its satirical edge, but underneath it lies a recognizable exhaustion: scrolling, reacting, posting, and repeating.

Sirens, slogans, and a rhythm on alert

Post-Punk, Electroclash, and Alternative Rock take on a mechanical, urban quality. Spoken-leaning vocals, repetition, and sirens create a confrontational language, while the energetic rhythm turns paranoia into something physical. The chorus is designed to linger like an alarm that refuses to switch off.

When thought itself becomes evidence

The “thought police” represent surveillance no longer confined to the outside world, but capable of entering consciousness itself. “I scroll therefore I am” distorts the relationship between thought and existence, while “I speak therefore I’m banned” exposes the limits of digital participation. Repetition turns both lines into a mantra trapped inside the very system it challenges. That circular discomfort becomes “Thought Police” at its sharpest.
