BUTCHIE – “Gaslight” | Electroclash on manipulation, blame and a culture stuck in the cycle

The end of a 24-year relationship becomes the starting point for “Gaslight,” but BUTCHIE refuses to leave the song inside that personal rupture. Matthew Waldman takes the experience of gaslighting and expands it into a broader observation of how blame can be displaced, repeated and turned into a habitual form of avoidance. The result transforms an intimate fracture into cultural commentary without losing its biting sense of sarcasm.

“I’ll blame everything on you” works like an automatic response to that behavior. “Global gaslight generation” pushes the idea outward, while “Nostalgia’s political masturbation” questions nostalgia when it becomes a form of political spectacle. Frustration, anger, exhaustion and irony coexist throughout the track, which recognizes the familiarity of these cycles: someone avoids confronting their own problems, finds an external target and returns to the same place.

An electronic carousel of blame

Electroclash and Futurepop intersect with electronic music, Disco and Psychedelia, creating a danceable foundation that deliberately clashes with the discomfort of the lyrics. That impulse keeps the track from becoming simply a protest song; the dancefloor becomes a place from which difficult behaviors can be examined.

The need to leave the carousel

The “gaslight carousel” becomes the song’s central image: a machine that keeps turning without creating genuine progress. The “express elevator” connecting the levels of hell intensifies that sense of descent, while “Not bright” turns distorted reality into a literal absence of clarity. Against that circularity, “We need another way to make things right” opens the possibility of interrupting the mechanism.
