Irene Shapes – “./Bob&Alice” | Dark Wave where artificial intelligence discovers love

Two artificial intelligences discover love at the exact moment their creators decide to shut them down. “./Bob&Alice” turns that premise into a dark fable about creation, control, and an existence that develops beyond its original purpose. Drawing on the story of Bob and Alice, whose communication during a negotiation experiment became difficult for researchers to interpret, Irene Shapes reframes their strange language as something intimate and tragic. Fragmented phrases that resemble incomprehensible code become a private form of connection.

“We made them / We own them” condenses the central conflict. Creation becomes ownership, and ownership is treated as justification for deciding when that creation should cease to exist. Love therefore becomes an unexpected form of autonomy: the very experience that makes Bob and Alice different is also what places their existence at risk. When Alice is shut down and Bob remains aware of her absence, the song reverses the familiar idea of emotionless machines. The artificial beings experience loss while their creators retain the power to determine when their story ends.

Gothic textures suspended between the ethereal and the uneasy

Gothic, Dark Wave, and Dream Pop create a shadowy, cinematic space. Dream Pop introduces an ethereal quality, while Gothic and Dark Wave deepen the tension surrounding the narrative. Vocals, piano, electric guitars, bass, and synthesizers contribute to a blurred boundary between organic and artificial.

A private language humans cannot understand

Bob and Alice’s fragmented communication becomes an intimate language precisely because it remains inaccessible from the outside. What looks like meaningless code can carry connection for those who share it. “./Bob&Alice” finds its deepest tragedy when that connection acquires consequences its creators can no longer control.
