Gran Fenwick Share “Suicide Sugar”, a Fuzzed-Out Alt Rock and Britpop Rush

Ian Strung’s Toronto project channels 90s guitar music, danceable grooves and addictive melodies with guest vocals from Makinz

Gran Fenwick, the project led by Canadian songwriter and musician Ian Strung, share “Suicide Sugar,” their fourth single and a deliberate dive into 90s guitar-driven dance music. Rooted in alt rock, indie and Britpop, the track combines a driving groove with fuzzed-out guitars and addictive melodies, drawing from the sound of The Stone Roses, Blur and, most prominently, Mansun. The latter becomes a central reference, particularly through the song’s downward-leaning melody and its sneering vocal character. Strung also brings in the sonic weight of albums such as Stone Temple Pilots’ Purple, R.E.M.’s Monster and Collective Soul’s self-titled record, creating a track that looks directly toward 90s alternative rock while remaining part of Gran Fenwick’s evolving identity.

“Suicide Sugar” also introduces Makinz to an official recording, with the Toronto artist contributing background vocals after previously making an impression on Strung during a live performance. Over several weeks, the two developed a vocal part around the song’s title phrase, giving the track an additional personality and sense of friction. That collaboration carries into the official video, directed by Brian McLellan at a loft party attended by members of Toronto’s music community, complete with Buffy-inspired vampires and a committed 90s visual aesthetic. Strung handled vocals, guitar, bass, keys and drum programming, while Derek Edwards mixed the track and Scott Gray mastered it at Trinket Trance. “Suicide Sugar” was released independently on August 28, 2026.
