Loren Berí – “Stagehand” | Chamber pop about identity, performance and belonging

What happens when the lights stop confirming the place we thought we occupied? “Stagehand” builds its central doubt through theatrical language, tracing an identity beginning to come apart. Loren Berí imagines someone convinced they are part of the play, standing beneath the lights, only to wonder whether they have actually been backstage all along, moving the pieces needed for someone else’s story to continue.

“Was I just a stagehand?” holds the song’s tension between insecurity, disappointment and vulnerability. The narrator realizes she may have built an amplified version of herself in order to feel visible, accepted or loved. Even images of menstrual pain and having “grown up dust” bring something physical and ordinary into a broader reflection on belonging. Losing visibility can hurt, but it can also create an opening: stepping away from a role that is no longer sustainable and recognizing who remains beyond the performance.

Chamber-pop textures for a shifting stage

Lush chamber-pop textures meet an indie songwriting sensibility, keeping storytelling at the center of the track. The recurring theatrical imagery and “the stage lights dim” reinforce the feeling of moving between scenes, while the accessible melodic writing gives shape to an otherwise abstract question. The music follows the narrator’s shift from seeking the spotlight to questioning why she needed it in the first place.

When the backstage becomes a form of freedom

The stage represents visibility and recognition; backstage is where the scene is arranged without necessarily receiving attention. “Stagehand,” though, refuses to treat that position as simple failure. If the lights dim, the performance can end as well. The contrast between “I thought I was in the play” and “was I just a stagehand” ultimately points toward a deeper distinction: the distance between being oneself and performing a version of oneself in order to belong.
