Distance can change the way we see what we have left behind. On “Explain,” Mikey Demilio turns that movement into the song’s central perspective, combining indie rock and indie pop with a direct, bright energy. “I see it all when I ride away” places the narrator at a distance where things seem easier to observe, even if that new perspective does not necessarily provide answers. Movement becomes a way of looking, while the song remains deliberately close to something that still resists definition.
“It’s just something I can’t explain” returns like a persistent thought. Alongside the frustration directed toward people whose judgments never seem to change, “I’m hurting for everything” introduces a much more personal vulnerability. The narrator is not entirely outside the situation he observes; he is part of the same journey, searching for his own “getaway”. That tension between a shared experience and an individual escape gives the song much of its emotional weight.
Energy that keeps the journey moving
Brief phrases and a recurring refrain reinforce the feeling of an unresolved thought going in circles. The song’s energetic character sits against the narrator’s uncertainty, creating an effective tension between momentum and confusion.
Everyone is on the train, but not going the same way
The train expands the song’s central image of movement: “We’re all on this train” suggests a collective experience, even as each passenger searches for a different way out. “Explain” does not attempt to resolve that uncertainty. Its strength lies in turning the inability to fully understand what is happening into the very impulse that keeps the song moving.
