Hannah Louve Benedum – “The Only Thing Dying Was Light” | Doom-folk caught between ritual, violence and resilience

Light becomes the one thing capable of offering direction inside a landscape shaped by abandonment, violence and ritual. “The Only Thing Dying Was Light”, the first glimpse of Black Tar Frailty, introduces Hannah Louve Benedum’s solo chapter through a sound where acoustic elements carry unexpected weight. Her doom-folk approach turns low-tuned guitar, saturation and reverberant space into physical extensions of a vulnerability that refuses to disappear.

The song’s religious imagery offers little comfort. The “maiden of the temple”, the shrine and the cathedral become settings for submission, while spirituality appears contaminated by violence. “Born into filth” and “abandoned” deepen that sense of exposure, while “yours or mine” introduces a more intimate fracture: even the perception of truth becomes uncertain. Rather than forming a linear narrative, these images remain as fragments of an experience that resists easy resolution.

Spectral weight in a doom-folk setting

Low-tuned acoustic guitar, distortion, reverb and delay give the arrangement a density that brings folk closer to the weight associated with post-metal. Benedum’s unsettling, expressive voice adds an almost spectral quality, holding melody between calm, desperation and contained urgency.

When light becomes what is lost

“The only thing dying was light” captures the song’s central contradiction. Light suggests clarity and hope, yet its disappearance unfolds within a world where rituals offer no protection and hands can become instruments of harm. Benedum turns that darkness into a form of resistance: fragility remains present, but it does not mean surrender.
