The Toronto-based Peruvian-Vietnamese artist transforms mental chaos, emotional exhaustion and the urge to escape into a collision of glossy pop and alternative rock energy.
“Ruin Your Life” began with an intentionally provocative idea: disrupting a perfect façade and ruining someone else’s life simply because misery loves company. As Jenny Palacios developed the track, though, that apparent anger revealed a much more personal source. The artist realized she was not actually angry at anyone; she was overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted by her own thoughts. What emerged was a song that turns a tongue-in-cheek revenge fantasy into a reflection on growing older, feeling emotionally staggered and trying to escape negative rumination. The title remained because, even within that more vulnerable interpretation, it preserves the playful quality Palacios wanted the song to have.
Sonically, the single sits between the polished edge of modern pop and the grit of alternative rock, embracing a full-band approach that reflects how Palacios sees the track translating to her live performances. Its emotional and visual direction also draws from the chaotic, glitter-covered electricity of Rihanna’s “We Found Love” video, channeling that sense of euphoric disorder into a night where external movement becomes a way to quiet internal noise. “Ruin Your Life” also extends Palacios’ DIY approach, shaped by her background in graphic design and art direction and her practice of building a distinct visual identity around each release. Following songs such as “Back of My Hand”, “IYKYK” and “Who Couldn’t Love You”, alongside a performance at Vans Warped Tour, Palacios now offers an anthem for anyone who has shown up to the party physically while remaining somewhere else inside their head.
