Jet Black Berries – “Johnsonville” | Horror-punk between gothic western and science fiction

A lost town at the edge of the universe, a wanted outlaw, and a saloon showdown: “Johnsonville” compresses all three into a brief scene that plays like a miniature audio film. Now remastered, the track revisits one of Jet Black Berries’ early excursions into horror-punk, turning the familiar language of the classic western into something stranger. Law, violence, and revenge remain at its center, but they are displaced into a landscape where gothic imagery and science fiction reshape the genre’s familiar rules.

Bill arrives in Johnsonville with a price on his head and finds the man who has been tracking him. The story needs very little exposition to establish a sense of fate. The repeated arrival and confrontation make the town feel suspended in time, while “All is still in Johnsonville” works like a cinematic freeze-frame before violence resumes. Much of the tension comes from that deliberate narrative economy.

Bouncy punk under gothic shadows

The blend of punk, gothic/darkwave, and rockabilly gains its character through contrast. The drums provide a bouncy, forward-moving pulse, while gothic synths introduce darker, almost cosmic textures. Punk attitude and roots-rock momentum remain intact, but they are placed inside something more theatrical and unsettling.

A western stranded at the edge of space

Johnsonville becomes more than the setting for a shootout: it is a refuge beyond conventional order. Horses, guns, the saloon, and revenge belong to western mythology; the synths push those elements toward science fiction. Within that collision, Jet Black Berries creates a scene where violence feels inevitable and, for one suspended moment, time itself appears to stop.
